“As Canada continues to recover from the pandemic, employers are actively looking to fill hundreds of thousands of vacant positions in all sectors across the country. Immigration is more important than ever to fuel Canada’s economy, as our strong economic growth is now outpacing our ability to find and keep workers. Canada is a top destination for global talent. We need to use this fact to ensure that businesses and employers have access to the skilled workers they need to grow and succeed.” - April 22, 2022

With these words, Canada has decided to stake its reputation as an ideal destination for skilled workers in the global labour market, opening up new pathways for immigration in Canada. We know that during the COVID pandemic, some people wishing to fulfill their immigration goals have faced a challenge that was only increased by the global event. The IRCC has changed the scope of some of the immigration programs allowing longer stays and easier acceptance for those already in Canada.

There are new Express Entry (EE) draws for Canadian Experience Class (CEC), Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) and Federal Skilled Trades (FST) candidates that will resume in early July to address a chronic labour shortage. According to Canada's Immigration Minister Sean Fraser, most new applicants who receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) can expect their applications to be processed within six months.

Prior to the pandemic, successful EE ITA cut off scores ranged from the low- to mid-400s. But the score dropped to 357 in June & July 2021 and 75 in February 2021 for the CEC-specific invitation.

Meanwhile, a new temporary policy will allow recent international graduates with expiring temporary status to remain in Canada longer. Post-graduate Work Permit (PGWP) holders who are in Canada will be eligible for up to 18-month extension for their PGWP expiring between January and December 2022. The process and details will be shared in the next few weeks.

Feel free to contact 2-Canada if you want to discuss your eligibility on the EE program. And if you hold an expiring PGWP and learn how to extend it, stay tuned in our recent immigration news.
